DiamondSure brand Pro-Sintered Diamond Drill Bits are also know as Sintered Diamond Core Drill Bits or Sintered Diamond Hole Saws.  These are professional quality, heavy-duty diamond drill bits designed for use on ceramic tile, porcelain tile, limestone, sandstone, marble, granite, quartz and other stone, plus bricks, masonry, concrete block, and concrete.  Water must be used for lubrication.

Sintered diamond drill bits are not very effective for glass type materials or softer stone materials such as slate and are not recommended for use on glass or slate.  Bonded diamond bits are much more effective for those types of materials.  See DiamondSure Bonded Diamond Drill Bits

Sintered diamond drill bits have the diamonds embedded into the metal of the drill bit tip rather than merely "bonded" to the tip as with bonded diamond drill bits.  As the tip wears down on a sintered diamond drill bit, new diamonds come to the surface.

Sintered diamond drill bits are heavy-duty bits designed for long life.  Generally, sintered bits will have a long life of 20 to 30 or more times the life of a bonded diamond drill bit, if used properly.  The heavy-duty design provides long life when drilling in very hard materials such as porcelain tile, granite and hard stones.

There are some disadvantages.  Sintered bits are more expensive than bonded diamond bits and the thick heavy-duty tip causes them to drill more slowly than thin-wall bonded diamond drill bits.  However, for highly repetitive drilling in hard mateirals, the higher cost of the Sintered Diamond Drill Bits is well worth it because of the much longer drill bit life.  Sintered bits are also necessary for drilling beyond about 1/2" deep as the heavy-duty design can withstand the severe heat of deeper drilling in hard materials.

Diamond drill bits are easy to use, but many drilling techniques are different from standard drilling.  To assist our customers, basic Instructions are presented below and we have also compiled a detailed Drilling Tips & Techniques section.

Other: Drill bit requires water for lubrication and cooling.
Raise the drill bit up slightly every 30-40 sec,
to allow water to penetrate to the drilling tip.
Proper drilling speed, pressure and lubrication are necessary to keep the bit from over heating when drilling in very hard materials.
Do not use with a hammer impact drill.

Note: Pro-Sintered Diamond drill Bits are 'hollow' drill bits.  They are sometimes called a 'core drill' or 'hole saw' style drill bit.  However, the two smallest sizes - 1/8", and 3/16" are actually 'solid' tip drill bits since their very small size does not allow for a center hole.

Pro-Sintered Drill Bits - Water Lubrication

Water must be used for lubrication.  There are many ways to lubricate the drilling, as explained in our Drilling Tips & Techniques page.

It is important to "pump" the drill every 30-40 seconds, to allow water to seep to the drilling tip area.  Merely raise the drill bit slightly to allow water to flow to the tip and keep the tip from running dry.  This simple technique helps keep the drill bit from overheating, extends the bit life considerably and helps avoid causing "heat fractures" in the work material.

Simple lubrication methods include drilling under water in a cake pan or tub, using a small clay "dam" around the drill hole area or even using a spray bottle to spray water directly into the drill slot.  These simple lubrication methods are very effective when used properly and they work well for most drilling applications.

Another effective lubrication method and the one used by many professionals, is to use a Water Swivel, also know as a Water Feed System.

All DiamondSure Pro-Sintered Drill Bits have a shaft size of 10mm.  Our water swivel section includes the DX-902 Swivel with a 10mm Collet, designed for use with drill bits that have 10mm shafts, such as the DiamondSure Pro-Sintered bits.  See: Water Swivel Devices

IMPORTANT
Diamond drill bits require use of proper lubrication,
correct drill speed and proper pressure.
Drilling methods and techniques can vary significantly
depending upon the specific material being drilled.

Starting a Hole Saw / Core Drill and
Using A Center Pilot Starter Bit

Starting a hollow core drill / hole saw style drill bit can sometimes be difficult.  Our Drilling Tips & Techniques section discusses the various starting methods.

Method 1:  To start drilling, you can usually hold the tip in place with your fingers while running the drill at a very slow speed.  Once the bit has created a slight 'groove', the drill bit will remain stationary on it's own.

Method 2:  For smaller drill bits, you can also hold the drill at a 60 degree angle while running the drill at a very slow speed.  As the drill bit begins to drill, slowly tilt the drill bit up to vertical.  Once the bit has created a slight 'groove', the bit will remain positioned.

Method 3:  A template can be made by drilling a pilot hole, the size of the diamond drill bit, in a piece of soft wood or plastic.  Hold the template in place over your drilling area and use the 'pilot hole' to hold the drill bit in place when beginning to drill. You can also use a "V" on the edge of a starting template to help hold many sizes of core drill bits.

It is very important to use proper drilling techniques to keep a diamond drill bit from over heating and to avoid causing "heat fractures" in the material being drilled.  Proper drill speed, low pressure and good water lubrication are very important factors.
